Become a Resident Assistant (RA)

RA Selection Graphic Icon

Being a Resident Assistant (RA) is one of the most unique and rewarding leadership opportunities that students can have during their time at the Mount. Not only do RAs serve as exemplary role models to peers living in our residential communities, but they also acquire a multitude of transferable skills that will assist them with many of their personal, professional, and academic endeavors at the Mount and beyond.

Attend an Interest Session to learn more about the RA position and the selection process, and to get started. If you have questions, we can answer them, or your current RA can tell you more about life as a RA at the Mount.

How to Become an RA

Step 1: Attend the RA Interest Session

During the months of October and November, we will be hosting several RA Interest Sessions to provide candidates with more information about the position and selection process. Each session will be led by current RAs and members of the Residence Life Professional Staff, who will be able to answer all of your questions as well as provide some insight and advice for candidates. Below is the schedule for this year's information sessions:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014 at 5:30 p.m. in Gelles Conference Room in McGowan Center

  • Thursday, Oct. 30, 2014 at 4 p.m. in the McCaffrey Hall Main Lounge

  • Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014 at 8 p.m. in the Sheridan Hall Lounge

  • Thursday, Nov. 13, 2014 at 8 p.m. in the Powell Hall Lobby

  • Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2014 at 5 p.m. in the Gelles Conference Room in McGowan Center

Step 2: Complete the RA Application

Applications are available beginning October 21, 2014, and are due on December 5, 2013 by 5 p.m. Apply Online with the RA Application.

The Residence Life Professional Staff and the RA Selection Committee will carefully read each application before sending out invitations to participate in January's Interview Days.

Step 3: Acquire Two References

A reference from a current RA and a reference from a former or current supervisor, employer, academic instructor, or coach are required components of the application process. The online reference form can be found at RA Reference Form. Please send this link to your respective references. All completed reference forms are due on December 5, 2014 by 5 p.m.

Step 4: Participate in Interview Days 2015

All candidates who have successfully completed the steps above and meet all other criteria to be eligible for the RA position, will be invited to participate in Interview Days. All interviews will be conducted on January 17 and 18, 2015. You will be contacted during the winter break with information on which of the two days you have been assigned to attend. Interview Day consists of individual interviews with Professional Staff and current RAs, as well as group activities with other RA candidates.

Step 5: Complete the RA Mentorship Process

By early February, all RA candidates will be contacted regarding the status of their application. Those candidates who are offered RA positions or RA Alternate positions for the 2015-2016 academic year will be required to participate in the RA Mentorship Process, which is an exciting way for applicants to get some hands-on, real-life experience on what it means to be a RA at the Mount.
