Youth Swimming Lessons

The Mount St. Mary’s Instructional Swimming Program offers a progressive swimming curriculum to children between the ages of six months to 14 years in an effort to teach the youth of our community to swim and be safe in and around the water. Our program strives to create a safe and fun aquatic environment by teaching beginner to advanced swimming skills and inspiring a growing love of swimming.

Courses Offered

Aqua Tots (Ages 6 months - 3 years)

Children between the ages of six months to three years have an opportunity to become comfortable in the water while bonding with a parent or trusted adult in the Aqua Tots class. Aqua Tots classes are held during our spring and summer sessions only.

TOPSS (Age 3 yrs.-1st grade)

Children from three years of age through first grade learn the basics of swimming with an instructor in small groups in the TOPSS program. Age appropriate swimming and boating safety skills are included in all sessions. Instructor/Student Ratio is 1:6.
TOPSS represents the following five levels:
  • Tadpole 1 - Little or no swimming experience. Is not comfortable putting the face in the water. Cannot swim independently with the use of a backpack. 
  • Tadpole 2 - Is comfortable in the water. Can put face in the water and blow bubbles. Can kick with a kickboard independently for a distance of 15 feet, and can swim on front and back independently with the use of a backpack for a distance of 15 feet.
  • Otter - Is comfortable in the water. Can put face in the water, demonstrate front and back floats, can kick with a kickboard independently for a distance of 30 feet, and swim on front and back independently with the use of a backpack for a distance of 50 feet.
  • Porpoise - Enjoys going under water! Can kick with a kickboard independently on front and back, swim on front and back independently with the use of a backpack for a distance of 25 meters, and swim for a distance of 5 feet without a backpack. Can jump into deep water without assistance.
  • Seal - Is very comfortable in the water. Enjoys going under water and jumping into deep water. Can swim on front and back for a distance of 25 meters with the use of a backpack and 20 feet without a backpack.
  • Shark - Can perform all of the above skills and can swim on front and back for a distance of 25 meters without the use of a backpack. Is ready to start working on stroke technique for freestyle and backstroke.

Swim School (Grades 2-10)

Youth in second grade through age 14 learn more advanced strokes and techniques all while having a great time with their peers in the Swim School program. Age appropriate swimming and boating safety skills are included in all sessions. Instructor/Student Ratio is 1:6.
There are seven levels in the program, spanning from beginner to advanced:
  • Beginner One - Little or no swimming experience. Cannot swim independently.
  • Beginner Two - Is comfortable in the water. Can put face in the water, kick independently with a kickboard, perform front and back floats independently, and swim on front and back for a distance of 20 feet without assistance. Can jump into shallow water independently.
  • Intermediate One - Can demonstrate all above skills. Can swim on front and back independently for a distance of 25 meters without assistance, and can jump into deep water without assistance.
  • Intermediate Two - Can demonstrate all skills listed above and can perform the following skills for a distance of 25 meters: freestyle with rotary breathing and backstroke. Can demonstrate the beginning of elementary backstroke and breaststroke kicks. Can jump and dive into deep water.
  • Intermediate Three - Can demonstrate all skills listed above and can perform the following skills: 50 meters each of freestyle with rotary breathing and backstroke.  Can complete 25 meters of elementary backstroke and breaststroke kick using proper technique. Can dive into deep water.
  • Advanced One - All skills listed above as well as the following skills with proper technique: 75 meters of freestyle and backstroke, and 50 meters of elementary backstroke and breaststroke, and 25 meters of butterfly kick. Can jump and dive into deep water.
  • Advanced Two - All skills listed above as well as the following strokes using proper technique: 100 meters of freestyle and backstroke, and 50 meters of elementary backstroke and breaststroke and 25 meters of butterfly. Can dive into deep water.

Winter Session

The Winter Swim Session will be held on Wednesday evenings from January 16 to February 20, 2019.

Swim Lesson Costs

  • Early Bird Discount ends on Friday, January 4, 2019, at 3 p.m.
  • Mount Community includes Mount students, all full- and part-time employees and eligible family members. To receive the community rate you must register with your Mount email address.
