Making a Link between Business and the Biotech Industry
Frederick, Maryland - Mount St. Mary's University is offering a new Master of Science degree program in Biotechnology and Management (MSBM). The program is designed for scientists and technicians in the biotech field who wish to navigate the disciplines of science and business.
"This innovative degree program fills a real need within the region. We have many scientists trying to start up or manage their own biotech businesses but don't have the necessary management and business training," said Jeffrey A. Simmons, Ph.D., dean of the School of Natural Science and Mathematics. "This program offers a distinct path offering comprehensive training in both fields."
Students enrolled in the MSBM program receive training focused on developing advanced scientific and professional business skills - in the areas of project management, accounting and finance, management, product development, and regulatory affairs - as well as an understanding of the ethical framework of the biotechnology business world.
"Graduates will receive training not provided by science or business programs alone," said Matthew Rittler, Ph.D., director of MSBM program. "They will graduate with an expanded scientific understanding and will be prepared to step into the roles of leading and managing projects involved in translating biotechnology research to patient populations."
Following a cohort model, graduate students take eight-week courses meeting one evening a week at the Mount's Frederick campus, with cohort groups forming in August and January. For more information please visit www.msmary.edu\biotech .
