Special Assistant to the President for Community Leadership is Named

Emmitsburg, Maryland –Paula Whetsel-Ribeau, Ph.D., has been appointed as the Special Assistant to the President for Community Leadership at Mount St. Mary’s University. In this role, she will provide leadership enhancing the Mount’s efforts in building an inclusive, welcoming, academic community for all students, faculty and staff. 

“We are excited to have Paula as part of the Mount team,” says President Thomas H. Powell, “Paula will play a critical role in enhancing our culture and campus life to support and enrich the Mount student body.” 

Dr. Whetsel-Ribeau will also work with the President’s Office in advancing the Mount’s profile in the Mid-Atlantic region, through active participation with government offices, foundations and professional associations.

“I am proud and thrilled to join the Mount and its historic legacy of more than 200-years of excellence in Catholic education,” says Dr. Whetsel-Ribeau.  “I am inspired by the programs and people defining the Mount community.”

Before joining the Mount, Dr. Whetsel-Ribeau worked at Howard University, in Washington, D.C., serving as the Executive Director of the Alternative Spring Break Program; Founder and Chair of the Howard University – Women As Change Agents initiative; and was a faculty member in the Afro-American Studies Department.  She has also served as the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and an Education instructor at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

Dr. Whetsel-Ribeau has served on numerous community boards in the past, and was appointed by the U.S. Department of Education to the National Board for the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education.  She is a member of many professional organizations and has been involved in numerous community service activities, both locally and nationally. The numerous awards and citations she has received characterize her commitment to goal attainment, ethical leadership, and a tireless commitment to creating institutions that improve the lives of others.

Dr. Whetsel-Ribeau, holds a bachelor of science degree in education from Bowling Green State University, a master’s degree from Kutztown University in Pennsylvania, and a Doctorate in Leadership Studies, also from Bowling Green — where she graduated with academic distinction. She is married to Howard University’s 16th President, Dr. Sidney A. Ribeau, and they are the proud parents of three children.
