Veritas Student Leadership Portfolio
The Veritas Student Leadership Portfolio (or Veritas Portfolio) provides students with an opportunity to reflect on their curricular and co-curricular experiences at Mount St. Mary’s University. The goal of the program is to give each student a deeper understanding of how to use their gifts to make the world a better place. Students can also use their Veritas portfolio as a virtual résumé and take it with them after they graduate to become more competitive in today's job market.
The Veritas Portfolio is part of the undergraduate curriculum. It involves a series of four levels where students incrementally build an interactive online portfolio (eFolio) to showcase the leadership skills they learn at the Mount. They are also able to reflect their personal interests and future path. All students in the Veritas program will prepare and present their own personal Veritas Portfolio to a committee of faculty, staff and students.
Veritas Student Leadership Portfolio Levels
VSLP 100: Basic Skills Level
Ordinarily students will complete a résumé workshop with Career Services during August orientation. Make-up sessions are also scheduled during the fall term. Then, in the Veritas 101 Symposium class, students will write a biographical statement (letter of introduction) and prepare their resume. Once approved by their Veritas Symposium professor, students will upload their biographical statement (letter of introduction) and résumé to their eFolio account.
All students must log on to their Veritas Portfolio (eFolio) account by September 1, and upload their documents by October 1.
VSLP 200: Experience & Reflection Level
As students become engaged in the campus community, they will be asked to reflect on one experience in which they played a leadership role. The reflection questions are located online in their eFolio account. This may be completed in the second or third year.
VSLP 300: Studies Level
Each student will complete an approved leadership portfolio course and complete a term paper. Students also have the option of completing the Veritas leadership reflection paper. This level may be completed any time, junior year is preferred. Approved leadership portfolio courses will be listed as "LP" courses through the Registrar Office.
VSLP 498: Senior Level: Creating and Presenting your Veritas Portfolio
During course registration in the fall or spring term of senior year, all students will enroll in the Veritas Portfolio course, VSLP 498. Students will sign up for the section assigned to his or her major. To pass the course, students must have completed their Veritas Portfolio, with the following information:
An updated résumé (eFolio Task 1 and Task 1b)
An updated letter of introduction (eFolio Task 2 and Task 2b)
One reflection on a leadership experience (eFolio Tasks 3 and 3b)
One term paper from a leadership portfolio course (eFolio Task 4 and 4b)
A finished Veritas Portfolio (eFolio task: Looking Ahead). When complete, please make your page “public.”
Once complete, each student will publicly present his or her Veritas Portfolio to fellow Mount students, faculty, and staff, supervised by the Institute for Leadership. The presentations will take place during the senior capstone course in some majors; it will take place on a Saturday in others. The precise dates will be provided in class.
Students will be asked to frame their final Veritas Portfolio presentation around three main questions:
What are your gifts and interests?
How have you developed them at the Mount (major field of study, other activities)?
How will you apply them to the larger society upon graduation?
Please Note: Education majors will enroll in VTLP 498 in the spring term of their senior year. Enrollment in the course will result in students being invited to present the leadership aspects of their Program Completer Portfolio. This will include the Veritas Leadership Reflection Paper (level 300) and the Professionalism portion of their PCP.
