Elementary & Special Education Major
The elementary/special education program is a dual certification program that requires a major in elementary education and concentration in special education. The program leads to certification in elementary grades 1-6 and generic special education grades 1-8. This Maryland Approved Program meets certification requirements in other states.
Elementary / Special Education
A Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary/Special Education requires 131 credits. Students are advised, however, to consult certification requirements in states of interest early in their study. Courses include:
3 General Science courses, as approved by the Department of Education (must include both a physical and biological science).
3 electives, or 4 electives to form a concentration
Elementary Education Minor
Any student in good standing at the University may minor in education. The minor consists of 18 credits, which are fulfilled by taking
Declaration of Major and Declaration of Minor forms are available through the registrar's office.
The International Reading Association has awarded the Certificate of Distinction for Reading Preparation to the Education Department in recognition of its quality reading instruction in preparing elementary teachers.
