Mount St. Mary's University Examines His Legacy

Emmitsburg, MD – Mount St. Mary’s University Seminary announces, in celebration of the beatification of John Henry Cardinal Newman in September of 2010,  the seminary will be hosting BLESSED JOHN HENRY NEWMAN IN THE 21st CENTURY: His Intellectual and Spiritual Legacy.

The symposium will explore the intellectual and spiritual pilgrimage of the great English Cardinal who is hailed as the “Imperial Intellect” of the 19th century.

It takes place on Saturday, October 2 and begins at 7:30am with Mass in the Mount’s The Chapel of the Immaculate Conception.

The all-day symposium includes presentations from expert scholars including; the Very Reverend Charles Morerod, OP, a Swiss Dominican who is currently Rector of the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome and Chair of the Vatican’s International Theological Commission.  He has authored many books on Ecclesiology and Ecumenism.  His most recent books are The Church and the Human Quest for Truth (2008) and Ecumenism and Philosophy (2006); Fr. Ian T. Ker is Senior Research Fellow in Theology at St. Benet’s Hall, Oxford, and has taught both English literature and theology at universities in Britain and the United States.  He is the author and editor of more than twenty books on John Henry Newman.  His most recent book is entitled John Henry Newman (2009).

Mount St. Mary's University Seminary, one the oldest and largest Catholic seminary in the nation, having been founded in 1808, is often referred to as the “Cradle of Bishops” because 51 of its graduates have become bishops, including one 19th-century cardinal.
