2 More Hall of Fames for the Mount's Coach Jim Phelan
Emmitsburg, MD - Legendary Mount St. Mary’s University men’s basketball coach Jim Phelan has been selected for induction into a pair of halls of fame later this year. Phelan will be inducted into the Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame on August 6, 2010 and the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame on November 11, 2010. With these two inductions, Coach Phelan is now a member of 12 different halls of fame.
Coach Phelan became one of the basketball’s all-time winners with a record of 830 wins and 524 losses over the course of 49 basketball seasons. The man with the bow tie coached in a total of 1,354 games, all as head coach at the Mount.
The Philadelphia native and former basketball star at LaSalle ranks fifth all-time in career wins behind Bob Knight, Dean Smith, Adolph Rupp and Mike Krzyzewski. The two-time national coach of the year led his team to the NCAA College Division championship in 1962 and guided the Mount in 19 seasons with at least 20 wins. After moving to Division I, his teams earned NCAA Tournament berths in 1995 and 1999 as well as the National Invitation Tournament in 1996.
Phelan is one of four inductees into the Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame. The others include 1920 bronze medal winner in the javelin Harry Liversedge, Olympic medal swimmer Gregory Burgess and 1948 NFL Rookie of the Year Charles Conerly.
The United States Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame honors former Marines who have excelled both on and off the athletic playing field. Established in 2001, Hall of Fame inductees will be enshrined in the National Museum of the United States Marine Corps at the Heritage Center near Quantico, Virginia.
Thirty-three former Marines have been selected for the Hall of Fame since it was founded in 2001. Past inductees include baseball legend Ted Williams, Olympic great Robert B. Mathias, International Boxing Hall of Fame member Ken Norton, and golf legend Lee Trevino.
The Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held at the Clubs at Quantico, August 6, 2010 at 11 a.m.
Phelan is one of 15 inductees into this year’s Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. The list includes Dick Allen (baseball), Hobey Baker (hockey), Elizabeth Becker (diving), Tom Brookshier (football), Ron Hextall (hockey), William Hyndman III (golf), Phil Jasner (sportswriter), Bobby Jones (basketball), Leroy Kelly (football), Tug McGraw (baseball), Mike Quick (football), Bobby Shantz (baseball), Marianne Crawford Stanley (basketball) and “Jersey” Joe Wolcott (boxing).
The Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Reception will be held on Thursday, November 11, at the Sheraton Society Hill.
