The Mount Host Special Olympics Fall Sports Festival
Emmistburg, MD – Mount St. Mary’s University announces on Saturday, October 23, 2010 it is hosting the Special Olympics’ Fall Sport Festival. Opening ceremonies begin at 9:15 a.m. with events lasting through 5:00 p.m. All sporting events will take place at the Mount’s athletic center, the ARCC.
Over 500 athletes are expected to take part in this year’s Fall Festival, competing in a number of events including, tennis, flag football, power lifting, and distance running.
“The Mount and Maryland Special Olympics have partnered for many successful years to put on the Fall Sports Fest,” says to Jeff Abel, the Mount’s director of Community Services. “This is an important event for us here on campus, and we feel honored to host these inspirational athletes. It's always a great day on campus.”
The Mount, in order to give students a better understanding of the Special Olympics, event coordination and non-profit organizations, it offers a business course entitled: Program Development and Implementation: Special Olympics. The course is taught by members of the Special Olympics Administration and Mount students take the lead on planning, volunteering and implementation of the Fall Festival Event.
