Men Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: A march to end violence

Men in High Heels (It’s a Serious Thing)

A Gender Violence Awareness March

Emmitsburg, MD – Mount St. Mary’s University announces on Thursday, October 7th beginning at 5:00 pm, students, faculty and administration will don women’s high heels and walk a mile to help support the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes as part of an international men’s march to end sexual assault, rape and gender violence.

“Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is an important opportunity for Mount men and women to stand-up, in a not-so-easy way, and take a stand against dating violence,” says The Center for Student Diversity Assistant Director Chianti Blackmon. “Dating violence is a serious issue that needs attention.  We shape strong, responsible leaders here at the Mount to take a stand and speak out against any injustice, and we stress that it is our community responsibility to enlighten, support and take steps to end dating violence.”

The Walk a Mile in Her Shoes March is a compelling visual and practical expression inspired by the classic saying you can’t understand a person’s experience ‘until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.

The organization strives to inform the community that services are available for recovery. It demonstrates that men are willing and able to be courageous partners with women in making the world a safer place

Participants are asked to raise a minimum of $20 which will be donated to a local rape crisis and domestic violence shelter.

Following the walk, a panel discussion will take place following the march at 6:00 pm in the Mount’s Knott Auditorium.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is sponsored by the Mount's Center for Student Diversity and the Woman's Empowerment Program.
