Emmitsburg — The campus of Mount St. Mary's University was buzzing Sunday as the instituion welcomed its largest freshman class.

The Mount has a freshman class of 475 students, almost 60 more than last year.

Kyle Carter, an 18-year-old from Frederick , was among those moving in.

His parents and siblings helped him move in to a dorm room he will share with a roommate.

They brought a van's worth of belongings, plus a few boxes in another car.

But it didn't take them long to unpack because the university organizes volunteers and ROTC students to help the freshmen unpack.

"It's pretty exciting," Carter said. "It was pretty easy too."

He is happy to know that he was part of the largest class in Mount's history, and was glad that he made it and wasn't put on a waiting list.

This year, the Mount received 3,582 applications, about 400 more than the previous year.

Having a larger freshmen class brings housing challenges, but Dean of Students Michael Taberski said that fits in with the college's long-term renovations.

The college is renovating the Terrace area, home to three freshmen dormitories.

Some of the freshmen were moving into the McCaffrey residence hall, which was just completed.

The Mount gutted the interior of the building, added new furniture and created lounge areas, Taberski said.
