Leadership Opportunities at Mount St. Mary's University



Mount St. Mary’s University is home to many successful leadership development programs, and students usually take advantage of more than one opportunity. The Leadership Institute also sponsors events throughout the year which are open to all Mount students.

Monday, September 17th, 2012- Annual Constitution Day Celebration!
October 2012- the Mount will host the Leadership Training Institute. At LTI, training sessions are held on parliamentary procedure, how to research and draft legislation, as well as informational sessions on the organizational structure of leadership in MSL.

Previous Events
Friday, April 20th - Sunday, April 22nd, 2012 Students from the Political Science Department and Leadership Residential Community attended the annual MSL Legislative Session in Annapolis, Maryland. Mount student members experienced firsthand the legislative process in the most conducive environment possible, the actual House of Delegates and State Senate chambers.
Tuesday, March 6th, 2012 - the Leadership Insititute and Political Science Department hosted a Maryland Student Legislature (MSL) information session. Tom Nelson from McDaniel College and Spencer Knoll from Hood College presented a student leadership training session.
March 14th and 15th, 2012 - the Pre-Law program, Political Science Department and the Leadership Institute co-hosted a unique experience at the Mount - Congress to Campus. Former Congressional Representatives - Rep. Dan Miller (R-FL, 1993-2003) and Rep. Martin Lancaster (D-NY, 1987 – 1995) - spent two days on campus visiting classes, meeting with students, faculty and the Mount community to share insights into the inner-workings of Congress and the issues Congress currently face. The program included a evening panel discussion open to the public, and an informal discussion session with Mount friends and alumni.
October 3rd and 4th. 2011 "Leadership, Liberty and the Liberal Arts"
The Leadership Institute hosted Dr. Peter Josephson from Saint Anselm College. He conducted a series of workshops on-campus with faculty, students, and administrators. Dr.Josephson is a scholar of John Locke, and has recently managed a Department of Education $200,000 grant on the “learning liberty” initiative at Saint Anselm College. His knowledge and experience has helped various campus constituencies think about how to develop leadership programs on campus.
