Room Change Process

Either you selected a roommate(s) or, with the aid of your Roommate Preference Surveys, roommate matches were made by Residence Life staff in hopes of creating compatible living assignments. However, if you are experiencing difficulties with your roommate(s), your RA is available and eager to help you resolve your concerns, and should be your first staff contact. It is our experience that with the aid of your RA (and their Supervisor, if necessary) most roommate conflicts can be worked out through a mediation process. If a room change is deemed the best solution to resolve your roommate conflict, a room change can be approved by Residence Life. Room changes are available any time during the semester, EXCEPT, the first and last two weeks of each semester which is considered a "Room Freeze" period. Room Freezes are used to verify assignments and occupancy during move-in and check-out periods.

A Residence Life professional staff member will meet with all parties involved prior to approving any room change request. You cannot change rooms without prior written approval from Residential Life professional staff. You will be charged $50 if you switch rooms without authorization, and you will be required to move back into your original assignment.

If you need assistance with a roommate problem or room change, your RA is always willing to help you. If you still have questions, call the Residence Life office at x5274 or residencelife@msmary.edu.

Terrace Renovations

The Terrace, our oldest residence hall, is in the first stage of a multi-year renovation.  In the Fall of 2010, this 425 bed residence hall will be a state of the art residence hall that will be the foundation for our community on campus.  You can view updates ot the project at the Facebook Group "Terrace Renovations".

What to Bring - What not to Bring

What to Bring…

  • For each student, your residence hall room is furnished with a twin bed, (80 inches in length requiring extra long sheets), dresser, desk, desk chair, closet, and a window shade.
  • You should find the following list of items helpful when packing to come to the Mount:
  • Linens:  towels, wash cloths, flat sheets, (not fitted unless extra long size), blankets, bedspread, and pillow. Most students like to bring a foam for their mattress as well.
  • Toiletries:  shower bucket, soap and soap dish, aspirin, first aid supplies, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, razors, hairdryer, etc.
  • Household items: laundry bag, laundry detergent, drying rack, paper towels, sewing kit, hangers, alarm clock, personal fan, desk lamp, non-halogen room lamp, area carpet or rug, waste basket, and a hand vacuum.
  • Stationery Supplies:  calculator, dictionary, thesaurus, paper punch, pencil sharpener, ruler, tape, scissors, personal computer (computer center is available to students), surge protector, bulletin board, memo board, stamps, book bag/back pack.
  • If you wish to provide curtains, Sheridan Hall window measurements are 66”x40”.  Pangborn Hall window measurements are (1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors) 62”x42” and (4th Floor) 36”x54”.  Terrace windows vary in size and you will have to wait until your arrival for those measurements. Room sizes also vary.  You will have to wait until you arrive until final measurements can be taken.

What Not to Bring…

  • Fire safety regulations disallow the following appliances/devices:
  • Space heaters, oil corn poppers, toaster ovens, toasters, hot plates, George Foreman Grills
  • Candles, incense, fireworks, firearms,
  • Electrical amplifiers
  • Halogen lamps and beanbag chairs
  • Due to health code restrictions, cooking is not allowed in residence hall rooms.
  • Road signs or other signs that were not legitimately purchased are not allowed.
  • Please leave all pets at home (except small fish).
  • Non-permitted items will be confiscated and not returned to you so leave them at home!

Decorating Don’ts….

  • The Office of Residence Life hopes all students feel as though their room on campus is their second home.  Students must adhere to the following guidelines when decorating their rooms.
  • Do not use adhesives.  Mirror tiles, self adhesive cork boards, contact paper, “stickups” and double sided tape cause significant damage to the walls.
  • Do not place anything on  the exterior room doors.
  • Do not bring halogen lamps.  They are a significant fire safety hazard.
  • Do Not Bring Candles or Incense or Incense Burners!

Some Important Things to Know...

The Code of Student Conduct and Residence Life

The Code of Student Conduct is located on www.msmary.edu/judicial. In this publication, you will find the guidelines for residence hall living. Please read this carefully and refer to it frequently. You will find important and useful information about the services available to you, along with community standards developed by students, faculty, and administrators. These are intended to support what we hope you will accomplish at the Mount.
