May Closing FAQs


When do I have to leave?
No later than 2PM on Friday, May 11, 2012.  Graduating seniors and Commencement Helpers, click here to view the Graduates and Commencement Assistants page. 

If I am a senior or commencement assistant, can I keep items in my room/suite/apartment after 6PM Sunday, May 13, 2012?
No, everything must be removed from your room/suite/apartment since you will not be returning.  Anything found in your room/apartment after 6PM on May 13, 2012 will be discarded and you will be charged for the removal.

If I am a commencement assistant, how do I get approved to stay past May 11, 2012?
The office or department you are working for must request for you to be approved for interim housing for the dates you will be working. This request must be submitted to Residence Life by the deadline of  May 1, 2012. Commencement Assistants will not be approved to stay beyond 6pm on Sunday, May 13, 2012.

What if I fail to return my residence hall room keys?
Any key that is not returned to Public Safety will result in a $55 charge per key which will be charged to your student account.

Can I place other keys in my checkout envelope for return?
No, you may only return your residence hall room, hall or bedroom key in the checkout envelope. Any other keys you are in possession of must be returned to Public Safety by Friday, May 11, 2012 during regular business hours of M-F 8:30am-5:00pm. Any key not returned will result in a $55 charge on your student account.

What if we have damage in our room(s)?
Any damage in your room/suite/apartment must be reported on a Damage Responsibility Form(PDF).  Any damages not listed on this form that are found during check out will be divided up among the residents of the room/suite/apartments. The cost associated with repairing the damage(s) will be divided up and charged to each resident.  The Damage Responsibility Form is available to download online by clicking here, from your RA and in the Residence Life Office.(PDF)

What if I ignore the checkout expectations?
Failure to checkout or to follow the procedures for appropriate checkout may result in additional financial charges to your account including but not limited to a $50.00 improper checkout charge.

Are there any other charges?
Depending on the condition of a room, failure to clean a room will result in a fine ranging from $50 to $500.  This includes bathrooms, kitchens, refrigerators, and stoves. Failure to reset furniture will result in a $50 charge to the student’s account.  Additional damage charges may result from missing furniture and room damage.

Is there summer storage?
The University is unable to offer storage to any students during the summer.  If you have storage needs, please contact a storage facility found in the Frederick or Gettysburg area such as:
