Residence Hall Check-out Options
All residential students must choose one of the following options when checking-out of their residence hall room, suite or apartment in May. Please carefully read through both check-out options and select the one that will be most convenient for you and your family during May Closing.
► RA Regular Checkout(Available to all residence halls) - Students must sign up with an by May 7, 2013 to utilize this check-out option.
► Express Checkout (Available to all residence halls) If you do not sign up with an RA for Regular Checkout by Tuesday May 7, 2013, you must utilize the Express Checkout Option.
Students choosing to utilize the RA Regular Checkout option must sign-up by Tuesday, May 7 for a 20 minute check-out time with a Resident Assistant in their residential area or building. Sign-up sheets will be posted on the doors of all RA rooms, suites and apartments prior to last week of classes. Students should wait in their room for the RA to arrive for their scheduled check-out time. Students are also given the opportunity to take responsibility for damages in their room/suite/apartment by completing the Damage Responsibility Form(PDF).
Students choosing RA Regular Checkout must do the following:
Obtain an RA Regular Checkout Envelope from their RA or the Residence Life Office
Fill out the form completely before checking out with an RA
During the 20 minute check-out inspection, give their residence hall room, floor and/or bedroom keys to the RA to verify the key codes written on the envelope.
Give the RA Regular Checkout Envelope to the RA completing your check-out before leaving campus.
Note: You must only return your residence halls keys in the check-out envelopes provided. All other University keys in your possession must be returned to Public Safety by May 10, 2013 during regular business hours M-F 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. If any key isn't returned, you will be charged per key on your student account by MSM Public Safety.
What happens when I choose the RA Regular Checkout?
During the 20 minute inspection, an RA from your building will come to your room/suite/apartment and conduct an initial room inspection for your side of the bedroom (which must be completely empty of all belongings) using the Room Condition Report (RCR) form completed in August (or upon your move-in to your current housing assignment). The initial room inspection will be followed up by later inspections by Residence Life staff - damage may be found in the later inspection which the resident(s) of the room is responsible for restitution of. Residence Life will bill your room/suite/apartment for all identified damages including those found after all students have checked out.
The common areas of your apartment/suite (i.e. kitchen, bathroom, living room) will not be completed on your RCR until the last person leaves. It is very important that you help clean and prepare those common areas for checkout to make sure that all your roommates will be able to leave at the appropriate time. Please remember to utilize the Damage Responsibility Form so that only the appropriate students are billed for any damages in your room/suite/apartment.
Students choosing Express Check-out must do the following:
Obtain an Express Check-out Envelope from their RA or the Residence Life Office
Fill out the envelope completely, including their signature and the check-out date
Place their residence hall room, floor and/or bedroom keys in the envelope and seal the envelope.
Give the Express Check-out Envelope to your RA in person or an RA in your building in person before leaving campus.
Note: Students understand, as stated on the Express Checkout Envelope “...that by signing the Express Checkout Envelope/form, I waive my right to appeal all charges associated with the condition of my room/apartment.”
You must only return your residence halls keys in the check-out envelopes provided. All other University keys in your possession must be returned to Public Safety by May 10, 2013 during regular business hours M-F 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. If any key isn't returned, you will be charged per key on your student account by MSM Public Safety.
