Men's Rugby

Mens Rugby

In the archives of Mount St. Mary’s University there are references to a sport being played in 1891 on the school’s older fields where the ball could not be thrown forward. In the modern era, our organized roots go back to 1973.

The Mount St. Mary’s Rugby Football Club (MSMRFC) is a Division II team competing in the Potomac Rugby Union. The MSMRFC welcomes new members of all skill levels, even those who have never played a minute of rugby in their lives. The Mount rugby team prides itself on providing motivated players with a rewarding and memorable undergraduate experience.

The intention of this club is not only to succeed on the pitch but also to promote brotherhood, establish fraternal relations with other teams, and be of service to the community off the pitch to our best ability. The fraternity on the team far exceeds any other men’s club on campus, and no one is excluded from the group.

The team has one of the best coaching staffs around. Led by its head Coach Jay Myles, the team has drawn in a variety of international coaches: Eric Miller of Ireland; Hennie Van Zyl of the South African Springboks and Scott Robertson, former New Zealand All-Black. The coaching staff also has a frequent international mainstay in forward’s coach Tony Flay with the assistance of John Gooch and Mike “Cowboy” Piavis.

The coaching staff is now beginning to spread the Mount rugby tradition into the summer with new summer clinics for current players and U19 prospects interested in Mount rugby, or just interested in rugby in general.
