June Orientation 2008 - An Overview

We are delighted that you have chosen Mount St. Mary’s University, and we look forward to meeting you shortly.

Mount St. Mary’s will conduct two New Student Orientation Programs in June. The first will be held on Friday and Saturday, June 13 and 14, and the second on Friday and Saturday, June 20 and 21. You must attend one of these programs. Besides accomplishing some practical tasks, this is a great opportunity to meet some of your classmates, learn about activities available on campus, and begin the process of becoming a member of the Mount St. Mary’s community.

On Friday afternoon, there will be diagnostic tests in math and foreign language so that we can determine where you can best begin your college learning in these fields.  All new students who intend to continue a foreign language they studied in high school must take the foreign language diagnostic test.  The math diagnostic test is required of students whose math SATs are below 530. (More details will be sent to your home in May.)

On Saturday morning, you will meet with a faculty advisor, who in most cases is your Freshman Seminar instructor, and register for a preliminary schedule of fall courses.  You will also complete a housing survey that will help our staff match you to a residence hall and roommate.

We also encourage your parents to attend this orientation.  There will be sessions on academic and personal issues that students experience; we will provide basic information on financial matters, housing, dining, health, and other concerns.  Parents will also have an opportunity to meet other parents, faculty, and administrators of the Mount.

We ask that you arrive between 11:00 a.m. and noon on June 13 or 20.  At the check-in location, you will receive a specific weekend itinerary and get your picture taken for your college ID card.  The program will end with lunch on Saturday.  Dress for New Student Orientation is casual.  Information will be sent to your home in May on recommendations for things to bring.

Registration is required for the June Orientation.  The official Registration will be sent to your home in May.   If you have questions, please send our staff an email (orientation@msmary.edu).  Finally, if it is more convenient for you than a fast food stop, lunch will be served on campus on Friday (the cost is included as part of your orientation fee).

We wish you a very happy high school graduation, and we look forward to welcoming you in June!
