Break-Away: Serve like never before!

Get away and experience America with the Mount's nationally recognized Break-Away program! Over each break, the Office of Social Justice heads across the country in partnership with some of the best community-based organizations in the world! Students spend a week in service to others while learning about systemic inequalities found in America and discovering more about their responsible role in society.

Fall 2012

Students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in two very different communities. Trip 1 will be to Philadelphia, Pa. Working alongside the Daughters of Charity, trip participants will be learning about organizations and agencies, including schools/after-school program, thrift stores, and community construction/revitalization. Time will also be spent learning about the Philadelphia community (with plenty of time to sample an authentic Philly Cheese Steak). Trip 2 will head southwest to Vanceburg, KY. While staying at Glenmary Farm, trip participants will fully immerse themselves in community service.& Without electronics or even knowing what time it is, students can begin to understand life in a community in Appalachia.

Check out our students' reactions to the Philadelphia trip!

Winter 2013

Members of the CORE team will take off to Cincinnati for a week of staff development and service with the Franciscan Sisters for the Poor. While working with housing opportunity partners, food assistance programs, and family programs, we'll grow as an organization to better serve our Mount community!

Spring 2013

Discover fair and equitable housing opportunities through Habitat for Humanity's Collegiate Challenge. Choose between Eastern Shore Virginia or Jacksonville, Florida, for a week of construction and reflection. We'll also provide an opportunity to work in New Jersey assisting with Hurricane Sandy Relief.

Summer 2013

Take part in the trip of a LIFETIME with Encounter: Belize; a 12 day expedition to Punta Gorda, Belize with the Office of Social Justice. Dive in depth into the cultural and environmental ecology of this beautiful country. Snorkle, hike, and swim in a waterfall; immerse yourself in a Mayan village home stay, and spend 5 days working with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. This is one experience you won't want to miss.
