Intercultural Development

Statement of Purpose

In accordance with the Catholic liberal arts tradition of the University, Intercultural Development works with students, faculty, and staff to foster an understanding and an appreciation of diversity as a condition of communal richness and intellectual excellence. It broadly defines diversity to include issues of race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, and special circumstances due to socio-economic status and physical conditions. It also serves as an advocate for diverse student groups by encouraging their academic success and involvement at the University.

To that end, it fosters and promotes intercultural awareness through lectures, performing arts, seminars, Café Conversations, trips, a diversity resource library, and much more.
It also affirms inclusion of diverse under-represented student groups by providing and sponsoring academic support, student success workshops, leadership development, Mosaic Buddy Peer Mentor Program, The Mosaic Times Newsletter, The William Randolph Hearst Minority Students Scholarship Program and much more!

Mount St Mary's University
General Statement on Multiculturalism

The following statement on multiculturalism is intended to demonstrate the commitment of the University to the maintenance of multicultural diversity and multicultural education, the benefits of which will no longer be limited to students alone, but will also be extended to faculty, staff, and administration. The following proposal is particularly sensitive to the Catholic posture of this university in academic, intellectual spiritual and cultural matters as well as to the promise of mutual respect and understanding inherent in such a posture. The statement was approved by the faculty on May 10, 1995.

The recognition and promotion of the inherent dignity of each person reflects the mission of Mount St Mary's University as a Catholic institution. Furthermore, it inspires the University's educational philosophy and causes the University to invite and welcome students, faculty, staff, and administration from all racial and cultural backgrounds. The exploration of the common denominators that link us and the understanding of our differences mark the educated person.

Mount Saint Mary's is committed to promoting an environment within which students, faculty, staff, and administration from diverse backgrounds will flourish spiritually and intellectually and will continue to develop as whole persons.

The mission and tradition of Mount Saint Mary's University therefore demand that we, as an institution, collectively and individually promote an environment in which reign mutual respect and understanding, based on, and informed by, an educated and enlightened knowledge of ourselves and the cultures we represent.
