Intercultural Development Objectives

OBJECTIVE #1: LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Mount St. Mary's University mission is to prepare students to "enable individuals to understand and challenge or embrace the cultural forces operating on them through the pursuit of truth." One of our goals is to provide our students with the opportunity to develop as leaders. We hosts a variety of leadership retreats for our T.E.A.M. (Teaching Everyone About Multiculturalism) Diversity Peer Educators, and Navigators Leadership Retreat, for new officers of C.I.D. Organizations as well as provide sponsorship for them to attend a variety of conferences.

OBJECTIVE #2: RETENTION

We implements strategies to ensure the success and retention of our students. We host a Pre-Orientation Program entitled, Mosaic Bound for first-year students, Academic Nights as well as the Mosaic (Buddy) Mentoring Program.

OBJECTIVE #3: ADVOCACY

We serve as an advocate for any person on campus who has encountered discrimination or an act of inequality, i.e. a hate crime.  We will intervene and provide the person with the appropriate steps to resolve the issue.

A Hate Crime is defined as criminal act directed at an individual or group because of membership in a particular racial, religious, ethic or gender group. Vandalism to a house of worship, assault on an individual, or a bombing of a building - each may be a hate crime - if it meets any of the following criteria:

  • When racial, religious or ethnic statements are made during the incident.
  • When hate group symbols are displayed.
  • When the motive of a crime is to harm, injure or intimidate a particular group or organization.
  • When the victim perceives it to be a hate crime.  (Maryland Online Hate Crimes Resource Center)

If you witness any act of discrimination or inequality, please contact Public Safety immediately.

For more information, please contact the Center for Intercultural Development at 301-447-5720.
