Health Services

The Mission of Health Services is grounded in the philosophy that health services in an academic community should be primarily developmental and preventative. This, using a holistic approach, we welcome the opportunity to be a resource for Mount students as they deal with the challenges associated with the transition from adolescence to young adulthood.

Our services are intended to facilitate the intellectual, physical and spiritual development of Mount St. Mary's students and help them become healthy, responsible, effective individuals and contrubuting members of a thriving and diverse community.

Health Services, located within the McGowan Center, was designed to meet the healthcare needs of all Mount St. Mary’s University undergraduate students and seminarians. At your service is a trained medical staff consisting of Medical Director,

Dr. Bonita Portier, DO and Nurse Manager, Susan Sanders, LPN.

Services:

Below are just a few of the many services provided to all undergraduates and seminarians:

  • Evaluation and treatment of injury or illness
  • Allergy injections
  • Immunization clinics including influenza vaccines
  • Management of chronic disease or disability in collaboration with student’s primary care provider
  • Medications: most medications prescribed by the doctor are available on site
  • Medication monitoring when indicated
  • Referrals to specialists as needed
  • Rapid strep, mono and flu testing

All undergraduate students and seminarians are eligible to use Health Services regardless of their insurance preference. Health Services itself does not accept insurance, although students are strongley encouraged to be insured and to carry their insurance card with them on campus.  A student should have health insurance in the event of diagnostic testing outside Health Services would be indicated or in the case of an emergency.

There are no fees for routine visits to Health Services, although there is a nominal fee for medications, allergy injections and diagnostic tests. Payment methods include cash, check or declining balance using the student’s Mount card. Any services received outside Health Services such as x-rays or lab services are the responsibility of the student.

A new service to Health Services and available to our undergrad students and seminarians during regular business hours, is the "Medicine Cabinet."  This service offers "one-time" doses of many over the counter (OTC) medications to the students after being evaluated by the nurse.

Graduate students may use Health Services by having the option of paying a fee each semester if they desire to use Health Services. You may contact the Accounting Department at 301-447-5353 or Health Services at 301-447-5288 for more information.
