| | | FEATURED ALUMNI
| Here is a small sample of our Class of 2009 Alumni:
| | | Tracy Flutie | In November, I will begin full time at a public accounting firm, RSM McGladrey, as a staff accountant in the tax department of their Gaithersburg office. I interned with McGladrey from January 2008--April 2009, a position I obtained with the help of the Career Center's "Meet the Firms Night."
About a week after graduation, I began studying and sitting for my CPA exam, which I hope to have completely passed by the end of 2009.
I'm pursuing my CPA license, which, once achieved, opens a lot of doors career-wise. My plan is to stay in public accounting for 5-8 years, and then go into private accounting. I may decide to go with a government position, but I could also see myself serving as financial director for a nonprofit organization, which would combine my passion for serving the community with my accounting knowledge.
I'm the first in my family to pursue a career in accounting, which meant I had no "connections" to assist me in finding an internship. In the fall of my sophomore year, I attended Meet the Firms night, offered by the Career Center in hopes of obtaining an internship with a public accounting firm. That summer, I worked for Watkins Meegan & Drury, a regional public accounting firm. I really enjoyed my experience there, but ultimately saw myself working for a larger firm. I attended Meet the Firms Night again the following year, this time seeking a tax season internship with a national firm. I took a position with RSM McGladrey, who I interned with for a year and a half. I was offered and accepted a full time position the summer before my senior year, which would become effective in the fall after graduation.
Without the help of the Career Center, whether it was planning the Meet the Firms Nights or reviewing my resume, I can almost guarantee I wouldn't be where I am today. Their assistance facilitated my finding an internship, which would've been a daunting task if done on my own. Additionally, Dr. Speciale, along with other BAE professors, were always willing and available to assist me with scheduling and career questions. | | | Christopher Kelly | | I am a Staff Accountant with McLean, Koehler, Sparks, & Hammond in Frederick, MD. I am also working on my MBA. My long-term plans are obtaining my CPA and becoming a Senior/Partner with my firm. Career Center gets all my kudos. They put me in every internship I had through the use of the Accounting Evening, and Student Central. The internships made me the number one recruit for the entire MKSH firm this year as well, who I interviewed with thanks to the Career Center. Influential people would be John Sherwin, my accounting advisor. He got me thinking about accounting in a real world perspective, and helped show me how to open new doors for my career. | | | Christina Caspersen | Currently I am in the Peace Corps and will be serving in Sub-Saharan Africa beginning in November. I will be teaching deaf children for two years. By the end of the summer I will find out which country I will be living in and what subject I will be teaching. All training for service will be in country so I won't learn anything until I get to my placement.
My long term plans, post Peace Corps, is to attend Grad school for a Masters in either Peace and Conflict Resolution or Human Rights. My service in the PC will help guide me in a specific direction and my field experience is exactly what grad schools are looking for, for the type of Masters I am seeking. After this I may work for the government, as the State Dept seeks out PC volunteers, or perhaps I will work for a non-profit.
To get where I am today, I used the Career Center for a number of things. Firstly, I participated in the Mount in Washington Program in the Spring of 2008. I found my internship through the Washington Internship Institute (WII) and chose the Embassy and Diplomatic Scholars Program. I interned for the Leadership Council for Human Rights four days a week and attended classes one day a week through WII. I received 12 credit hours for this internship which last the entire semester. This program greatly affected my long term plans and really helped me better define my future goals. I would encourage anyone from the Mount to experience this program.
I used the Career Center when I had my phone interview with the Peace Corps. They provided me with a quiet room to interview and were very accommodating with that. I also took the Career Development and Work–Life Transitions Course through the Career Center that helped get ready for after graduation.
The director of the Career Center helped me so much throughout my time at the Mount and I am more than willing to help in any way I can. She was so encouraging with my future plans and really guided me with everything I wanted to do.
| | | Kaitlin Keough | | Currently I am working for Wells Fargo Financial in Hagerstown MD as a Credit Manager. I worked with the Career Center to get involved in some great internships that helped me to gain new work experience that helped me to broaden my range in terms of job hunting. Mount Alum Jonelle Mooney (co 2008) referred me to Wells Fargo Financial after going to work for the company in Frederick following her graduation. | | | Samantha Russell | | As an International Relations and French double major with an emphasis on Economics, I wasn’t quite sure where I wanted to go after graduation. After working with groups and teaching leadership skills through volunteering with the Outdoor Adventure Program, I knew that I wanted to do some sort of service work right out of college. Throughout my academic studies and my involvement in the French Club, I became very close to Haitian culture and wondered what I could do to help. I discovered The Haitian Project, which is the volunteer program for the Louverture Cleary School in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti, and knew that this program was meant for me. Now, I am getting ready to embark on a year of volunteer teaching at LCS where I will work, live, and play with hundreds of Haitian children who are not only some of the brightest in their country but have a deep commitment to its development and future. I took part in an internship at Fort Detrick, Frederick MD with the International Relations Officer and used the services of the Career Center extensively. | | | Edmund McCullough | | While at the mount I studied abroad in Dublin and took part in an international internship in Ireland. This option was offered through the help of the Career Center. While in Dublin I interned with the Bank of Scotland. After graduation, I will be moving to New York City to work as a missionary for the Fellowship of Catholic University Students. | | Karen Cox | I am teaching 5th grade at Twinbrook Elementary School in Rockville with Montgomery County Public Schools. I am moving from upstate/western NY to Germantown, MD.
I plan on teaching for a few years then returning to school to obtain my masters in early childhood education, reading and/or special education. I intend on remaining a classroom teacher. I also hope to begin coaching swimming or sponsoring other extracurriculars in my school district within the next few years.
The list of resources I used to obtain this job are endless. I certainly used the career center to check my resume and schedule my initial interview with the county. Friends and family offered the support necessary to persevere. I was in constant contact with professors and old principals and teachers to help figure out exactly what would make me stand out against other candidates.
As far as specific people from the Mount Community, I certainly have to thank Professor Margaret Denton. Her guidance, obvious care, and unfailing support has been instrumental in helping me to obtain a job. All my education professors such as Dr. Carolyn Cook, Dr. Barbara Onofrey, Dr. Barbara Palmer, and many more I still feel as though I can go back to and ask any questions or guidance and they are more than willing to help! | | | Carroll Galvin | As a recent Mount graduate, I feel I cannot overestimate how much the Career Center and its staff have helped prepare me for the transition from college into the workplace. A lifelong love of reading and writing drew me to become an English major during my time at the Mount. To describe what my long-term goals are for my life after the Mount, I would have say that I want to pursue a career path where I can help others and see the effects of my work on a daily basis. The Career Center was instrumental in enabling me to apply for and accept a job offer with the FBI for employment after my time at the Mount. | | | Kathryn Rosario | Mount St. Mary's University Graduate Joins JVC Northwest in 2009 Recent Graduates Dedicate the Next Year of Their Lives to Serving as Jesuit Volunteers Portland, Ore. --- Mount St. Mary's University alumni have recently embarked on a year of full-time volunteer service with Jesuit Volunteer Corps (JVC) Northwest. This graduate is part of the 123 total Northwest Jesuit Volunteers (JVs) who began their service in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon or Washington last month. Their year kicked off with a weeklong orientation at Camp Adams in Molalla, Ore., and will continue through August 2010. “We’re excited these committed women and men are offering a year of their lives in service and working for the transformation of our world,” says Jeanne Haster, executive director for JVC Northwest. The 54-year-old program supports volunteers living in community in 19 locations across the Northwest. Volunteers live in urban and rural locations in houses that each support four to eight volunteers. The current JVs work in many areas, including advocating for refugees, nursing in community clinics, teaching in schools on Native American Reservations, assisting in shelters, and organizing a local response to climate change. JVs are also immersed in the four core values of JVC throughout their service year - social justice, simple living, spirituality and community.
