Today, about 70% of employers visit their job candidates’ social media sites before hiring them. Unfortunately, 1 in 3 employers reject job candidates due to inappropriate content they see posted online. Employers are looking for red flags when they browse through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other social media. This is why it is so important for job seekers to clean up their social media sites. The more actions you take to clean up your social media, the more likely you are to find a job after graduation.

To do this, follow these simple steps:
  1. Delete anything related to alcohol and drugs.
  2. Take down all discriminatory content about race, gender, religion, or politics.
  3. Remove content that bashes your previous employer.
  4. Go with your gut to determine whether or not something belongs on your social media page.
Note that taking these steps does not mean that you can hide things from potential employers. Once you post something, the content is out there for everyone to see. If you have a lot of inappropriate content, it is a bad idea to delete all of your social media accounts. Fifty-seven percent of employers are less likely to hire candidates whom they cannot find online. This means that it is good to have a social media presence - you must just use it correctly in order to increase, not hurt, your chances of finding a job.

Employers are looking for someone who has a professional image, shows creativity, and has excellent communication skills. They want to receive confirmation of the candidate’s background information and read what other people are posting about the candidate on social media. If all of these items are agreeable, the employer is more likely to hire the candidate.

To further increase your positive social media presence, follow companies and organizations that have social media sites. This allows you to keep up to date on their news, events and potential job openings. If you are following an employer on social media who is considering you for a job opening, this shows them that you are interested and have nothing to hide.
