I’m sure we’ve all been told at one point or another that our years at college will go by in a flash. We move into our freshman dorms and begin the transition of adjusting to college life, and before we know it, we are holding our diplomas and moving the tassel from one side of the cap to the other. These years at Mount Saint Mary’s University can be the most influential years of our lives, and the experiences we go through can directly impact the career opportunities we will receive after we graduate. So will you be ready when your own graduation day comes, sooner than you think?
My name is Meghan Orner, and I am a junior here at the Mount. I am a Communication Studies Major with concentrations in Journalism and Writing with a Minor in English. I have always enjoyed reading and writing, and I am thrilled to be writing weekly articles for the Mountain Echo as part of my internship with the Career Center this semester!Throughout the past several years, I have held two steady jobs, and this past summer I had my first internship at Clear Channel Media + Entertainment, which is in charge of six radio stations in the city of Philadelphia, through which I was able to learn and grow so much over the course of those several months.
And as I’m sure we all know how competitive the job market is in today’s world, especially for college graduates, landing an internship can be just as competitive for college students. But internships should be a key ingredient in one’s resume since most employers believe college students should have at least one internship. Internships are so important because they offer students real learning experiences and show that students have the specific skills and qualifications employers are looking for in job candidates. Not only do internships serve as great networking opportunities, but they also prove to possible future employers that an individual has the necessary skills to be successful. In addition to internships, involvement in a variety of school organizations on a resume is also impressive to employers to showcase leadership abilities and potentiality.
Remember that it can never hurt to have more experience than less when it comes to applying for various employment opportunities. Be sure to take advantage of all the opportunities the Mount and the Career Center have to offer so that when your graduation day comes, you’ll be ready!
