Liturgical ministries at Mount St. Mary's enable students to become acquainted with, and formed in, all aspects of liturgical life in order to become active members of their parishes. The Liturgical Ministries program has a dual purpose. It offers interested students hands–on, practical experience and training in areas of liturgy and liturgical planning, while at the same time it provides the Mount community with enriching liturgies. The Liturgical Ministries Committee of the Campus Ministry Student Organization coordinates these ministries in a variety of ways, including initial training and scheduling. Subgroups, such as the Liturgy Planning Team and the Liturgical Environment Team, are delegated to plan special liturgical seasons. This team also plans special events such as reconciliation services and outdoor Masses on a regular basis. Ushers greet worshipers as they enter the chapel, distribute bulletins, receive the offertory collection and count it after Mass, and organize the offertory Presentation of the Gifts. Choir and Contemporary Music Team serves during the Sunday 7:30 p.m. Mass. Singers and instrumentalists (piano, acoustic and electric guitars, bass, wind and percussion instruments) are needed. Participants should be willing to attend rehearsals. Liturgy Planning Team prepares the liturgy according to the liturgical calendar and the needs of the community, with special attention to the decoration and preparation of the liturgical environment. Lectors proclaim the Scripture readings and announce the General Intercessions (Petitions) at Mass. Altar Servers assist the priest celebrant at Mass. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion assist in the distribution of the Body and the Blood of Christ at Holy Communion. Sacristans prepare the chapels before and after Mass.
Please note that guidelines of the Catholic Church require that only practicing Catholics can serve as Lectors, Altar Servers, Extraordinary Ministers and Sacristans.
