A Brief History of Purcell Fr. McCaffrey was named the 7th President in 1838. During his tenure at the Mount many buildings were erected including Purcell Hall which was built in 1857 to serve as the Mount’s theatre. Purcell Hall was named after the 4th President who later became the Bishop of Cincinnati. At one time, the campus stables were attached to Purcell Hall. These also housed the final slaves held in trust by the college. In 1844 the college approved a plan for the gradual manumission of the slaves held in trust and in 1858 the formal manumission of the last slave occurred. In 1948 Memorial Gym was built and Flynn Hall (1903) was renovated to become the campus theatre. The stables were eventually removed and with Flynn Hall becoming the performance building Purcell Hall fell into disrepair and was used for storage until the 1970’s. In the 1970’s the building was renovated and turned into a study lounge for students. Since then it has undergone continued renovations and is now a late night lounge and performance venue for all forms of entertainment and lectures. Purcell Hall has seen many changes but continues to stand as a place for student interaction, involvement, and activities.
