Museum of Oppression

Frederick News Post Article

NBC25 News Story

It is with great excitement that I announce the first ever Museum of Oppression at Mount St. Mary’s University. The museum will consist of 5 rooms, each focusing on different aspect of oppression. There will also be 3 personal reflection rooms. Each room is being organized by a different student group on campus and will include information chosen by the students to illustrate oppression that they see occurring.

The summary of the rooms are (in no particular order)(For a guided tour of each room click on the room name):

Honoring Life (being organized by Mount Students for Life and Campaign to end the Death Penalty) – This will be a room to cover the importance of honoring life in general from conception to natural death and will have specific focus on how both abortion and the death penalty can only occur when we stop honoring the sacredness of the individual life. Once we stop honoring the sacredness of each person, we create the opportunity for oppression to occur due to the perception of others being less than ourselves.

Religious Oppression (being organized by the Campus Ministry Student Organization)– This room will focus on China and what happens to religious freedom under state controlled oppression of religion. The room will explore the effect of this state sponsored oppression on different religious traditions.

Racial Oppression (being organized by the Hispanic Cultural Association and Black Student Union)– This room will focus on “cultural amnesia” and will be more United States focused. It will explore the timeline of immigration to the United states starting with native Americans and move towards European and other immigrants, and how joining the American culture can lead to “cultural amnesia”. It will also explore recent examples of racial oppression that have occurred within the United States.

Gender Oppression (being organized by the Women’s Empowerment Program)– This room will have a timeline of 19th & 20th century oppression highlighting specific incidents, as well as exploring the prevalence of human trafficking, including America’s role in human trafficking.

Social/Political Oppression (being organized by Amnesty International)– This room will focus on the crisis in Darfur and will give visual and historical information about what is currently happening. There will also be a physical representation to help visitors understand just how many people have died and how many have been displaced because of the oppression occurring in Darfur.

Personal Reflection rooms (being organized by the Office of Intercultural Development)– Each of these small rooms will allow people to take a moment for personal reflection, guided by questions that will be placed in each room.

We recognize that it is impossible to address all aspects of oppression in a single museum, but we believe this to be a good start. Also, it is important to note that all the rooms will have positive stories, information, etc to show what is and what can be done to help put an end to these examples of oppression. We also note that Purcell is not handicap accessible, so we made teh videos of each room available on the web, just click on the room names to watch the video.
