Class of 2008 Hometown: Prince Frederick, MD Interests & Activities: WMTB Student Radio, Curling, Philosophy. Fall I can’t believe it’s November already. I am getting comfortable with my schedule and I’m budgeting my free time pretty well. I’m just really enjoying all of the flexability a college schedule brings. I love scheduling my classes so that I can wake up when I want to, and build my day with gaps in it for studying, so that I don’t have to worry about cramming or anything. There are also so many different cultural presentations and events going on around campus that are a great way to end a hectic day. My sophomore year is going great. Free Music I am really excited about a new internship I secured with Cdigix, the company the Mount now offers free music through. All undergraduate students have access to huge amounts of music, and it’s my job to make contacts with various on-campus departments and groups to help get the word out on the service. It’s a great way to meet people around the Mount and get a feel for how everything works. This internship has rejuvenated my interest in broadcasting and my radio program as well. Tuning In The semester is going really well so far. The philosophy courses I'm taking are tough, so I take that as a sign that I've chosen the right major. One thing I've been doing is a weekly radio program on our FM campus radio station, WMTB. I have a slot that is two hours long every Friday, from 6-8 p.m. I've only done one show so far, but I think I'm getting the hang of it. I've even launched a small website for it that can currently be found at http://eshow.maclenet.com/ I try to play a mix of stuff that you don't typically hear on college radio (or any radio, for that matter), including genres like industrial, big-beat electronica, neo-classical and older hip-hop, punk and metal. Our station also has an online stream linked to my site, so feel free to tune in to hear my program, or anyone else's for that matter. I have also begun contacting different artists that I like and asking for CDs to add to our station's collection. So far I have received feedback from three, which is a lot considering I have only done one show thus far. It's very cool being able to help promote and get the word out on bands that you've liked for a long time. Doing this radio show feels great because it's as if I'm making the step from just being a consumer of music to rationing it out to people who otherwise would not be exposed to it. This student-run radio station is yet another one of the many new experiences I've had since enrolling in the Mount. |
