Class of 2009

Hometown: Laurel, MD

Major: Communications with a minor in French

December: The day the Mount went to Loyola
I was recently appointed co chairperson of the Mount Spirit committee. Now this committee is responsible for promoting Mount spirit in any way, shape, form or fashion. When the Men’s basketball coach asked one of our fellow SGA members whether the Mount could bus students to Loyola for the Catholic Clash, my co chairperson and I were all over it. The Mount and Loyola have always had a healthy rivalry that was ignited last year with their win at home last year. Busing students was the perfect way to show our support for the team. On December 2nd, we pulled out of the Mount, 200 people deep and went to Loyola College in Baltimore. We were escorted through a back entrance to our seats. We took over the arena, yelling chants and supports for our boys out on the court. Even though we were scrutinized by the security and taunted by the Loyola crowd, we kept it together until there was a little scuffle on the court. We then launched into a very creative tirade of numerous chants (one which included the singing of “God Bless America”) against the harsh Loyola crowd. Even though we lost, we showed our Mount Spirit and started a trend: the athletics department will help us bus students to important away games. Not so bad for a bus ride.

November: Self Defense Class
Now I believe in empowerment of women. One thing about the Mount is that if you ask, you shall be given. As an RA, I have to ask others to help me out with hall programs. I thought that having a self defense class for my girls would be a great skill to have so I turned to EVP Dan Soller who also is the Karate instructor. I went to him and pitched my idea for him to teach us some Karate moves for self defense and he took it one step further: he called in Mount Alum Anthony Codispodi and his job FAST defense. FAST defense is one of the most widely recognized and award winning self defense class that trains its participants in 3 hours. You may think, 3 hours! Those 3 hours go by real fast when you are going through intense scenarios and learning how to defend yourself. We held this in the Aerobics room in the ARCC on a Friday night and we had 18 women and 2 men (one was a seminarian!) who loved each and every moment. After we did it, I now know other RA’s that want to do this program. Maybe when you come to the Mount, you’ll be able to attend a self defense class!

October:  LOFT week activities
Well, you may have heard about LOFT housing on the internet r if you came up to the Mount for a tour. LOFT stands for Lifestyles of Fellowship and Temperance, in other words, it’s a group of crazy (yet sane) people living in Pangborn, Bradley Annex and the A-Tower apartments who all believe that they want to live substance free. I love living here because I live with people who are just as crazy as I am, share the same goals (to graduate college and cherish every moment) and respect each other’s differences. We learn together, discover new things, chill in the hallways, join intramurals together and go on spontaneous Sheetz or coffee runs. Recently, we invited the whole school to see how we really are: energetic, athletic, spontaneous and down right funny with LOFT week.  Thorough out the whole week, we participated in a scavenger hunt (where people went around taking pics of things (and RA’s, I didn’t know about this part so I was the only RA in sight), a field day on Echo field, Karaoke night, a corn maze trip (that was sadly cancelled due to weather) and a screening of Saw III before it came out in theaters. The whole week was fun; it was like LOFT was turned into a zoo where anything goes. I got to learn things about people outside my building and people who I did not share a floor with and people got to know what LOFT was really about: community.
