Pastoral Spanish
SPAN 101-102 Beginning Spanish I and II (3 per semester)
An introduction to the Spanish language in the form most useful in Hispanic pastoral ministry in the United States or mission work in Latin America. The course develops the ability to speak, understand, read and write.SPAN 211-212 Intermediate Pastoral Spanish I and II (3 per semester)
Development of the skills in speaking, understanding, reading and writing Spanish as it is used in the Catholic Church.SPAN 300 Advanced Pastoral Spanish (1 to 3 credits per semester)
Practice in the composition and delivery of homilies, or other compositions related to faith or morals in Spanish, emphasizing clarity of style and pronunciation. Repeatable, as needed.SPAN 460 Spanish and the Christian Tradition (3)
In this course we will read, discuss, and write about texts in Spanish that have been important in the Christian tradition. Some were not written originally in Spanish (scriptural, patristic, and liturgical texts, papal bulls and encyclicals, etc.), others were: poetry and prose of Sts. Teresa of Ávila, Juan de la Cruz, Juan de Ávila, Jorge Manrique, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, Lope de Vega, Miguel de Cervantes, Benito de Feijóo, Bartolomé de las Casas, Miguel Sánchez, and others. Texts from Spain and Latin America will be read. The course is open to all students with proficiency beyond the intermediate level, and should be of special interest to seminarians and undergraduates majoring or minoring in theology or Spanish (prerequisite: SPAN 202 or equivalent).
