Perspective Makes a Difference

Ms. Buening is the first married lay woman appointed by Cardinal Keeler to serve as the pastoral life coordinator of a parish in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.  Drawing on her experience in parish ministry, Ms. Buening will discuss the significance that personal and institutional perspectives have on the field of lay ministry today.  She will also address the need for professional preparation opportunities for lay people in the field.

The Five Axioms of Call and Discernment to Lay Ecclesial Ministry

Mr. Trabbic is the founder of ISLE (The Institute for Sunday Liturgy for the Elderly), an organization dedicated to training lay ministers to celebrate Sunday Liturgy in the absence of a priest for those in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.  Mr. Trabbic will present the five axioms of call and discernment to lay ecclesial ministry.

Toward a Theology of Ministry
Kathleen Cahalan, Ph.D.

Dr. Cahalan is a theology faculty member of St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN.  She has worked with the Lilly Endowment in exploring ways to strengthen congregational ministry. Fr. Miller is a theology faculty member at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary.  He has served 14 years in parish ministry in the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ.

Father Frederick Miller, S.T.D.

Father Miller is a theology faculty member at Mount St. Mary's University.  He has served 14 years in parish ministry in the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ and has taught courses in Systematic Theology and Spiritualilty at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelpha; St. Joseph's Seminary in Yonkers, NY; the Franciscan University at Steubenville; and the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome.  He is the author of "The Trial of Faith of St. Therese Lisieux" and numerous articles and booklets.

Can You Hear Me Now? God's Call Transcending Time and Technology
Michael Galligan-Stierle, Ph.D.

Dr. Galligan-Stierle is the Vice President for the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities.  Previous to this position he served as the Assistant Secretary for Catholic Higher Education and Campus Ministry.  Dr. Galligan-Stierle will address the role of the Catholic university in encouraging lay ministry, using engaging stories from everyday life and biblical narrative.

2 p.m. Reviewing the development of the Bishops Document on Lay Ministry-”Co-Workers in the Vineyard.”
Richard McCord, Ed.D.

Dr. McCord is the Executive Director of the Secretariat for Family, Laity, Women and Youth for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the chief architect for Co-Workers in the Vineyard.”  Dr. McCord will explore the intent and content of the USCCB's document, Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord, and discuss its implications for ordained and lay ministers.

The Callings Conference is part of a Lilly Endowment Grant that "will be used as a catalyst to focus the campus community on the vocational nature of our academic programs, urging students to enhance and expand vocations in service and leadership, and to support students to serve as leaders in the church and society" (Mount St. Mary's University Vision Statement, June 2004).
