Campbell’s Soup VP Heads to the Mount

EMMITSBURG, MD – Mount St. Mary’s University School of Business announces the 2009 Symposium on Socially Responsible Investing will be held on Monday, November 16th at 7pm in the Mount’s Knott Auditorium.

The speakers include: Dave Stangis, Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability, Campbell’s Soup Company and Steve Lydenberg, Chief Investment Officer, Domini Social Investments.

The symposium will examine recent developments in Socially Responsible Investing and specifically examine how investors evaluate a company's commitment to corporate social responsibility.

This year’s symposium will feature the Campbell’s Soup Company efforts to be a global leader in corporate social responsibility and sustainability.  Attendees, including students and local business people, will have the opportunity to discuss with the expert panel the challenges companies face to become and stay classified as socially responsible.

“This will be a great opportunity for all who attend,” says Mount Professor of Finance and Economics, Dr. Karl Einolf.  “Both Steve Lydenberg and Dave Stangis have years of experience developing strategies for both companies and investors to improve their commitment to social responsibility.  Campbell's is a perfect case study because it is dedicated to not only selling safe, high-quality products to its customers, but it also accepts a responsibility to nourish those people who cannot afford to do so themselves.  Campbell's is committed to fighting hunger, to creating healthy foods, and to environmental sustainability.”

This semester the School of Business incorporated the Campbell’s model for social responsibility into its classes.  “As a School of Business at a Catholic University, we expect our students to understand that profits cannot come at the expense of our social values,” says School of Business Dean William Forgang.  “Campbell’s is faced with everyday real world challenges with human resource management, food quality and safety issues, and environmental stewardship.  We look forward to discussing how they handle these pressures.”
