Garage Sale on Wall Street: Buying to Make a Difference

Mount Holds First Annual Investing Symposium

EMMITSBURG, MD – Mount St. Mary’s University Department of Business, Accounting and Economics hosts the first annual Symposium on Socially Responsible Investing spotlighting the need for investors to put their money where it can make a difference.

The symposium, created by Mount Business Professor Karl Einolf, will cover issues a responsible investor must consider when selecting companies to add to their portfolio.  It will feature panelists Steve Lydenberg, Chief Investment Officer, Domini Social Investments and Geoffrey Geist, Manager of Strategy and Communication, Gap, Inc. Department of Social Responsibility.

The panel will review steps an investor can take to become socially responsible and will address the historical performance that responsible investors have earned in the market.  The panel will also specifically examine how Gap, Inc., owners of The Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic, are dedicated to facing ethical challenges within their daily business operations and how they use that perspective to attract investors.

“The unstable market has some investors running for the hills, while others are jumping in with both feet and we at the Mount, feel it’s important to bring to light, the ethical choices essential for review, when getting into the market,” says Dr. Einolf.  “Money moves mountains in today’s world and investors have great power to make positive change.  This symposium will show us the impact of socially responsible investing and how it can be profitable.”

The symposium is free and open to the public and takes place Monday, November 17, 2008 at 7pm in the Mount’s Knott Auditorium.
