Celebrating a True American Heritage The Mount Celebrates National American Indian Month Mount St. Mary’s University celebrates National American Indian and Alaskan Native Heritage Month with events focusing on first-hand experiences. “American Indians have such a strong story to tell and we have a great opportunity to hear from Native American Indians in our own Mount community,” says Johnika Nixon, director of the Mount’s Intercultural Development Office. “It is always an amazing moment when a student’s eyes open for the first time and learn about new cultures through hearing about real-life experiences.” 11/27/07 - The Mount’s Karl Little Owl lecture entitled: “Life on an Indian Reservation: Learning about American Indian Culture and Traditions.” The lecture takes place in Knott Auditorium from 7-9 p.m. with a Q & A session. 11/28/07 - “A True American Heritage: American Indians.” A cultural conversation with Mount students Karl Little Owl, Crow Tribe and Evelyn High Bull, Lakota Tribe and panelists including; Mary Reeves, Blackfoot Tribe; Irene Powell, MSM American Indian Program; the Mount’s Dr. Martin Malone and Dr. Michelle Patterson. The conversation will take place in the Mount Café in Patriot Hall, from 5-6:30 p.m. 11/29/07 – Students will be introduced to the American Indian culture through food. Entertainment provided by the Piscataway Nation Singers. Dinner begins at 4 p.m. in Patriot Hall. All events are open to the public.
