Information on MRSA There have been an inordinate number of stories recently regarding Methicillin or Penicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections or MRSA. As a precautionary measure several weeks ago, Mount Physician, Dr. Bonita Portier sent out a list of ways to reduce the risk of transmission of disease or infection. Staphylococcus and streptococcus infections are very common especially in student populations. “Mount St. Mary’s University staff met over the summer to take measures to reduce the risk of the transmission of MRSA and similar infections in the gym, sports areas and on campus in general,” said Dr. Portier. "No program is perfect but we can do our best to avoid outbreaks using precautionary and preventative steps which we have taken." The University has confirmed a recent occurrence of an MRSA infection. The person is being treated and steps taken to clean and disinfect the area in question. This case is not exceptional nor is it an uncommon strain of the infection. At this time there is no reason to consider this outside of our standard medical procedures.
