The Immigration Debate Continues

The Mount Offers a Panel of Experts

Emmitsburg, MD – Mount St. Mary’s University is holding a Political and Cultural Conversation today to conclude the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.  The Mount is bringing together two former congressmen, diverse panelists and Mount students to discuss the state of immigration policy and question its need for national or local reform.

“The topic of immigration in the US continues to grab headlines and heat up debates.  We wanted to set a panel so we could learn more about how this issue is handled on a local and national level,” says Mount Political Science Professor, Michael Towle.  “This is a good forum to hear from the students and the community and to open the immigration discussion campus-wide.”

The panel is made up of Mount alumnus and former U.S. Congressman Matt McHugh of New York and former U.S. Congressman Bill Goodling of Pennsylvania, the Mount’s Dr. Mike Towle, Dr. Maureen Oakley (Political Science) and Dr. Diana Rodriguez-Lozano (Foreign Languages Department) and Mount student Lauren MacKey.  They will address immigration policy and contribute insight concerning local and national immigration issues.

The discussion will take place today, October 1, 2007 at 4:30 p.m. in the O’Hara Dining Room, located in the Mount’s McGowan Center.  It is sponsored by the Political Science Department, the Land Development Office, Congress to Campus, the Hispanic Cultural Association and the Center for Intercultural Development and is open to the public.
