Bob Flynn, C’79, former men’s basketball assistant coach, died of a massive heart attack on Jan. 12. He was 49 years old.
As a student, Flynn was a four-year member of the men’s lacrosse team and served as a captain his senior year. Upon graduation, he became a high school basketball coach, before returning to the Mount to serve as Jim Phelan’s assistant coach from 1984-94. In his first year under Phelan, the Mount advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four. He also was on the staff when the program moved into Division I. Since leaving the Mount, he served as head coach at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Cardinal Gibbons High School and most recently McDaniel College. “Bob was a breath of fresh air,” said Phelan. “His enthusiasm and personality were contagious. He had such a positive impact on so many people of all ages, which was evidenced by the outpouring of emotion and support upon his death.” An estimated crowd of more than 1,000 mourners attended the funeral at St. Mark’s Church in Catonsville, Md. Bob is survived by his wife, Tina, his daughter, Caitlin, and twin sons, Michael and Ryan. An educational fund has been established for the children and a memorial dinner is scheduled for Sept 15.
