The Legacy of Weyanoke: Telling Our Own Story will take place at Mount St. Mary’s University on Wednesday, November 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Knott Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. The Legacy of Weyanoke was founded in 1990 as an a cappella vocal ensemble that performs songs and stories from the African Diaspora. Its members form a cooperative musical organization designed to research, preserve, perform, and educate the public about, folk-based music and literature with its origins in the African and Native American heritage. It is also part of the performing and fundraising arm of the Weyanoke Association for Red-Black history and culture. Telling Our Own Story takes audiences on a journey that pays tribute to that taken by their African ancestors, including those who established in 1619 the first known African settlement in an English-speaking colony in North America. The journey includes countless encounters with Native Americans, who became coworkers, allies, friends and family members. Through this musical oral tradition, audiences will learn about the, Black (African and American African) and Red (Native American or Indian) history and culture, and the places where they intersect.
