Mount St. Mary’s University received a grant of $216,270 in June 2006 to support 3 undergraduate scholarships over 3 years. Awarded through the Henry Luce Foundation, the grant is from the Clare Boothe Luce (CBL) Program for support of women in science and engineering. Scholarships are awarded to female undergraduates in their junior or senior year, who have declared their academic major through the Math and Computer Science Department in either computer science or mathematics. The three Clare Boothe Luce scholars for the 2006-07 academic year at Mount St. Mary’s University are: Alison P. Kopreski, a double major in Mathematics and Theology, from Vineland, New Jersey; Natalie L. Norris, a Mathematics major with a minor in Information Systems, from Frostburg, Maryland; and Kelly A. Leonard, from Sound Beach, New York, a Mathematics major pursuing certification in secondary mathematics education. All three will graduate in 2007. Recipients are designated Clare Boothe Luce Scholars, honoring Ms. Luce who enjoyed a remarkable 70 year career in journalism, politics, the theatre, diplomacy and intelligence. After the tragic death of her daughter, Ms. Luce turned to Bishop Fulton Sheen for spiritual guidance and in 1946 was received into the Roman Catholic Church. She died in 1987 leaving the majority of her estate to benefit generations of women. Currently, the CBL Program is the single largest private source of funding for women in science and engineering in the United States. |
