| The Departments of Sociology and Theology and the Office of Campus Ministry at Mount St. Mary’s University will host a Domestic Violence Awareness Symposium on Tuesday, October 3. October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The event begins at 6:00 p.m. with speaker Lisa Nevada, from Survivors, Inc. in Gettysburg. Nevada will discuss the problem of domestic violence, both nationally and locally, including the latest statistics, myths and facts, as well as how to make communities safer for victims. Survivors, Inc.’s mission is to support victims of domestic violence or sexual assault. The organization also works “to create a world where violence against women and children is unthinkable.” Nevada’s talk will be followed at 7:00 p.m. by the screening of Defending our Lives, a 30 minute Oscar® winning documentary about the magnitude and severity of domestic violence in this country. This educational video features four women imprisoned for killing their batterers and their terrifying personal testimonies. Both events are free and open to the public and will take place at Laughlin Auditorium on the Mount campus. A candlelight prayer vigil will be held outside Laughlin immediately following the film screening. Survivors, Inc, has also loaned the Mount one of their displays called Empty Place at the Table. It features place settings of women who have been murdered through domestic violence. It will be displayed at the entrance to the Mount’s Patriot Hall until the middle of October.
