Mount St. Mary’s University has appointed John T. Butler as Vice President for Advancement, effective July 1, 2006. Mr. Butler is currently President of Archbishop Carroll High School in northeast Washington, D.C., a position he has held since 1995. Archbishop Carroll is a 660-student coeducational Catholic high school, and the only high school operated by the Archdiocese of Washington. Archbishop Carroll employs 78 faculty and staff with an operating budget near $8 million.
“The mission of Catholic education is essential to building a just society and one that really speaks to my heart,” said Mr. Butler. “The decision to leave Archbishop Carroll at the end of this year was a difficult one. I am proud of what we have accomplished during these past 10 years, yet I am extremely excited to be joining Mount St. Mary’s University at this time in its almost 200-year history.”
In his position, Mr. Butler will be responsible for the Mount’s development and fundraising initiatives, bicentennial celebration, and alumni services. He will also provide the overall leadership for “Generations: The Third Century Campaign,” the most ambitious comprehensive capital campaign in school history.
“John Butler is uniquely qualified to lead the Mount’s advancement program,” said University President Thomas H. Powell. “I am highly impressed by his resume, life experiences, and, most importantly, his commitment to achieving our fundraising goals. I greatly respect his personal integrity and look forward to working with John as we continue to advance the mission of one of America’s great Catholic universities.”
His many accomplishments as president of Archbishop Carroll include increasing school fundraising and development nearly seven-fold—from $338,000 to $2.3 million annually—and has led the school to a resurgence in enrollment in recent years. He also established the innovative Business Champions program, a national model for school-business partnerships that includes mentoring, financial and in-kind contributions from area business leaders. Under his leadership, Archbishop Carroll became one of Cisco Systems’ first school partners—establishing a Regional Networking Academy and eventually training faculty from local Cisco academies, including one at Howard University.
Prior to joining Archbishop Carroll, Mr. Butler held several positions, including senior vice president and president of two management-consulting firms and as teacher and dean of students at Mackin High School, one of three schools that merged into Archbishop Carroll High School in 1989. In addition to serving as a member of the Mount’s Board of Trustees from 1995-2005, he has also held a seat on numerous other boards including the District of Columbia Workforce Investment Council and Leadership Greater Washington.
