Headline/Event title: David B. Rehm, Ph.D., Named Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs
Date: April 25, 2006

Mount St. Mary’s University has appointed David B. Rehm, Ph.D, as vice president for academic affairs. He replaces Christopher R.L. Blake, Ph.D., recently named president of Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Rehm came to the Mount as a professor of philosophy in 1995, and has also served as director of the Mount’s acclaimed Freshman Seminar program, academic dean, and associate provost. He is a graduate of Oberlin College and earned his master’s and doctorate from the University of Chicago.

“I am incredibly honored to assume this leadership role,” said Rehm. “My overall aim is simple: to serve this institution in the best way I can so as to help us grow as a community.  As the interim chief academic officer, I will devote my energies to promoting the strength and excellence of our academic programs.”

Rehm has had several articles published and has made numerous addresses at national conferences. He has also received many awards and fellowships—including the Mount St. Mary’s Parents’ Council Recognition Award, the John Richards Award for Teaching Excellence, and the “Outstanding First-Year Student Advocate” award by the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition. He is a member of the American Philosophical Association and the Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy.

“The Mount is very fortunate that Professor Rehm will serve in this capacity,” said University President Thomas H. Powell. “David brings a tremendous amount of leadership and integrity to this appointment and his commitment to our mission will ensure academic continuity as we approach our bicentennial celebration.”

A national search for a permanent replacement will begin immediately. The Mount has engaged the recruiting firm of R.H. Perry of Washington, D.C. to assist in the effort. Dan S. Soller, executive vice president, and Emilio Rodriguez, Ph.D., professor of political science, are co-chairing the search process.

Rehm resides in Gettysburg, Pa., with his wife, Nancy. They have two children: Alex, a junior at the Mount, and Remee Klos, a graduate of Temple University in Philadelp
