Welcome to Phillips Library!

Library_building

The Phillips Library is a center of learning for all Mount students. The library supports the curriculum and research needs of the undergraduate and graduate programs, students, and faculty through its collections, professional services, computer networks and databases, interlibrary loan and instructional programs. In addition, the library provides study space, material for leisure reading and equipment (photocopying, microfilm reader/printers, computers) to support classroom instruction and research. The library also collects historical material connected with early American Catholicism and the state of Maryland.

The library’s holdings are about 212,000 volumes housed in the Phillips Library, and Special Collections (East Campus). The library also provides access to more than 10,000 periodicals via print, microfilm or electronic format. The reference collection contains more than 3,000 volumes and numerous electronic databases. A librarian with theological training maintains the theology collection of approximately 43,000 volumes. The media center currently has more than 750 items listed as equipment inventory and more than 1,000 videotapes. The Special Collections include not only 8,000-10,000 volumes (including incunabula, rare items and back issues of 16 newspapers of historic interest), but also several hundred linear feet of archival documents in English, French and Latin; photographs; antique furnishings; an art collection; and the Congressional files of the Byron family.

Mount St. Mary’s shares its online public access catalog and library resources with Hood, Baltimore International, Villa Julie, Loyola, Notre Dame and Columbia Union Colleges through the Maryland Interlibrary Consortium. Students at the Mount have access through the consortium to the collections of the other participating libraries. This arrangement triples the resources available to our library users. In 2002 the consortium contracted with Endeavor Information Systems to provide state-of- the-art capacity for online delivery of information through Endeavor’s “Voyager” and “Encompass” systems. Students on or off campus can conveniently access the new systems.
