| First Year Seminar FRESHMAN SEMINAR Director: Dr. Roberta McFadden FSEM 100-101 Freshman Seminar (3, 3) Freshman Seminar, the foundation of the Mount’s core curriculum, is a yearlong course taken by first-year students in the traditional undergraduate program. It is taught to small groups of students by faculty from all disciplines in the university. The goal of this course is to initiate students into membership in a Catholic liberal arts community dedicated to lifelong inquiry in the pursuit of truth. This initiation entails their engagement in a process of reflection that brings them to examine critically the beliefs, opinions and value judgments that inform their actions in both the Mount St. Mary’s community and society at large. Freshman Seminar facilitates the development of writing, reading, critical thinking and speaking skills central to such inquiry and prerequisite for academic and personal success. Students develop these skills and self-awareness as they explore issues relevant to work, education and values. Faculty assist such exploration as seminar instructors and as advisors who are attentive to the personal well-being of students. MOUNT SEMINAR GE 200 Mount Seminar (3) (Division of Continuing Studies only) MountSeminar is designed as an introduction to the Mount St. Mary’s curriculum for Weekend College and Accelerated undergraduate students. It initiates students into the skills and habits of higher education as students make the transition to accelerated college-level work. The course includes units on writing, speaking, critical thinking, research, computer use and reading. Required as a first or second course for Weekend College and Accelerated students at Mount St. Mary’s University. |
