GSCI 101 Concepts in Physical Science: From the Big Bang to Molecules (3)

Introduces student to the basic principles and concepts of physical science and helps students understand how these principles apply to their lives. Major topics include the scientific method, cosmology, mechanics, wave motion, the elements, atoms, molecules and chemical reactions. By using quantitative reasoning and critical thinking, students will solve problems in an integrated lecture and lab setting. Prerequisite: college math proficiency requirement or MATH 101. Prerequisite or corequisite: college core math requirement (normally MATH 105). (Fall and Spring)

GSCI 102 Concepts in Biological Science: From Molecules to Populations (3)

Introduces fundamental biological concepts and helps students understand how these principles apply to their lives. Major topics include cell biology, genetics, evolution and ecology. By using quantitative reasoning and critical thinking, students will solve problems in an integrated lecture and lab setting. This course is not a prerequisite for any other science course. Prerequisite: GNSCI 101 and college core math requirement (normally MATH 105). (Fall and Spring)

GSCI 104 Concepts in Science: Physics (3)

An examination of physics as one of the natural sciences with emphasis on classical mechanics, quantum mechanics and special relativity. The laboratory demonstrates physical principles and illustrates how measurements are made. By using quantitative reasoning and critical thinking, students will solve problems in an integrated lecture and lab setting.  Prerequisite: MATH 105 or 108. (As needed)

GSCI 105 Concepts in Science: Astronomy (3)

An examination of astronomy as one of the natural sciences with emphasis on the appearance and apparent motions of celestial objects. The laboratory includes observations and practical experiments. Lecture and lab. This course does not fulfill the core science requirement. Prerequisite or taken concurrently: MATH 105 or 108. (Fall)

GSCI 120 Concepts in Science: Earth Science (4)

Survey of basic concepts of physical and historical geology, oceanography and meteorology. Emphasis on understanding the earth as our environment. Lecture and lab. Open only to education majors. This course does not fulfill the core science requirement. (Fall and Spring)
