| Accounting Program Requirements ACCOUNTING MAJOR A minimum of 30 credit hours is required for an accounting major: ACCT 101, 210, 211, 212, 301, 303, 401, 405 and 410 plus BUS 406, 360, or 361. Completion of this program of study results in a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in accounting and prepares the graduate for careers in a broad range of organizational positions requiring accounting skills. Most states, including Maryland, now require that a student earn at least 150 semester hours of college study in order to sit for the uniform CPA examination. A majority of these states also require that candidates for the CPA exam earn specific credits in non-accounting courses in order to qualify as a CPA exam candidate. Accounting students planning to sit for the CPA examination are strongly encouraged to determine the specific requirements for the state in which they are most likely to sit for the CPA exam. State laws vary widely and change from time to time. It is suggested that students who are likely to sit for the CPA exam consider the Mount’s CPA Track program. This program is an integrated B.S./MBA program approved by the State of Maryland. The program enables eligible students to start work full time shortly after completing four years with a Bachelor of Science in accounting, and then completing MBA studies within five years of starting course work at the Mount. The program achieves its objectives by allowing eligible juniors and seniors to integrate MBA course work with undergraduate course work during the regular school year and summers. Upon commencing full time employment, students can complete the MBA program with four specialized courses provided via Internet. Students wishing to participate in the CPA Track should consult with academic advisors in their sophomore or junior years if they wish to apply for the program. CPA TRACK PROGRAMMost states (including Maryland) now require applicants who wish to become certified public accountants (CPAs) to have completed the equivalent of 150 credit hours of college study. The Mount has developed a CPA Track Program that is approved by the State of Maryland. The CPA Track Program permits students to obtain the required 150 hours to qualify for the CPA through an integrated B.S./MBA program. The program enables eligible students to enroll in graduate MBA classes as early as their junior year. CPA Track students who follow the suggested sequence of courses for the program will be in a position to start full-time employment as a professional within three to four months after graduating with a B.S. degree in May of their senior year. Additional courses required for the MBA (typically 4 courses) are delivered on-line for maximum flexibility and effectiveness for new working professionals. Students interested in the Mount’s CPA Track program are encouraged to consult their academic advisor or the chair of the Department of Business, Accounting, and Economics, no later than the middle of their junior year. Details regarding the suggested sequencing of courses for the CPA Track can be obtained through the Mount’s MBA office.
