SERVICE LEARNING COORDINATOR
(AmeriCorps*VISTA)

Mount St. Mary’s University, a Catholic institution of higher education dedicated to liberal learning and respectful of the religious liberty of all, affirms the values and beliefs central to the Catholic vision of the person and society, and seeks to participate in compassionate engagement with the world. Hence, the University is committed to forming students who see and seek to resolve the problems facing humanity and who commit themselves to live as responsible citizens.

To that end, the University seeks an AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteer to create a plan for the development of a Service Learning Center on campus which will (a) facilitate a culture of service learning among faculty and students, and (b) support the work of community partners in North-Central Maryland.

The VISTA volunteer will work t 1) create an institutionally supported plan for the development of a Service Learning Center, 2) strengthen the relationships between community partners and the university, and help partner organizations develop sustainable programs involving Mount students, 3) co-ordinate educational programs to assist faculty in recognizing the appropriateness and effectiveness of service learning as a pedagogical tool, and 4) help develop new integrated service learning classes on campus. 

A successful applicant should be familiar with administrative models of higher education and be comfortable working closely with various communities on campus (including students, administrators, faculty, and professional staff) and community partners.  A service learning task force (comprised of university and community partner representatives), several mentors, and administrators will assist the VISTA volunteer in designing a suitable model for a new service learning center.

This AmeriCorps*VISTA position offers substantial opportunities for someone who enjoys working with a committed team and is serious about making a difference.
