Creative Writing Emphasis

Led by the Mount’s acclaimed novelist and poet, Dr. William Heath, the creative writing program includes classes and work on the college’s award-winning literary magazine, Lighted Corners. Students majoring or minoring in English may choose to take a series of courses in creative writing. ENGL 385 is open to all. A tutorial in creative writing (ENGL 385 T) is available to students who have shown exceptional ability in ENGL 385.

Minor in Education with State Certification for Teaching English in Secondary Schools

The minor in education includes the requirements for obtaining state certification to teach English in secondary schools (grades 7-12). This option is attractive because of the national shortage of teachers; those certified in Maryland are also eligible to teach in most other states. The Mount’s English education majors frequently report that the Mount’s program has made them much better prepared for the classroom than graduates from other institutions. For more information, visit the education department’s website.

Interdisciplinary Minors

Many of the department’s elective courses are cross-listed with other exciting programs, allowing students to add minors in Non-Western Studies, Latin American Studies, Gender Studies and Legal Studies.
