Declaring a Major

Although students can indicate to the dean’s office as early as freshman year their intent of majoring in a particular discipline, students cannot formally declare the education major until successful completion of an interview during the spring semester of their sophomore year.

To enter teacher education programs, students must:

  1. Submit, no later than the second semester of the sophomore year, the declaration of major form to the dean.
  2. Achieve cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better, at least a 2.0 in professional courses, and satisfy the university's requirement in writing proficiency.
  3. Participate in an interview.
  4. Take the Praxis I examination and obtain the qualifying scores required by the state of Maryland before formally entering the program in the junior year. Students may apply in writing to the chair of the department for an extension of one semester for this requirement, if special circumstances pertain. The Education Advisory Committee determines the acceptance or rejection of the application.
  5. All courses prefixed EDUC or SPED must be passed with a minimum grade of C. Other courses taken as part of an approved program of study may be subject to this requirement, as determined by the education department.
