Undergraduate Majors in EducationElementary Education The program in elementary education is designed to prepare students to teach at the elementary school level, grades 1-6 and middle school, and meets certification requirements in many states. Because of the specific sequence of course offerings in the program, it is necessary for students to enroll in the education program in the freshman year, or at the latest, at the beginning of the sophomore year. Elementary and Special Education This four-year program follows the requirements for the elementary major and includes additional courses for certification in generic special education (grades 1-8). Secondary Education The programs in secondary education are designed to prepare students to teach at the secondary level in English, social studies, foreign languages or math, and to meet requirements for certification in most states (grades 7-12). Each student who plans to teach at the secondary level must have a major in an academic subject field. An advisor in the department of education will be assigned upon the student's admission to a teacher education program. Art Education The program in art education prepares students to be certified in art (preK through grade 12). Students complete a major in fine arts with a concentration in art. They also take specific courses and field experiences at the elementary and secondary levels. Click here for requirements for the education minor.
